Connecting you to reliable transportation

Welcome to Pierce Transportation Alternatives, your local adaptability coalition for promoting alternatives to reduce congestion and improve access to transit mobility. Explore how we can help eachother navigate Pierce County with ease and intention.

Our mission

Sourcing alternatives to shortfalls in our current transportation system. We welcome one and all for help building solutions to reduce congestion, enhance mobility, reclaim our wasted energy, and grow resilience in our communities.

Transportation options

We advocate for transportation alternatives to meet the diverse needs of our county residents and visitors. Our approach is focused on understanding and responding to the challenges of urban mobility, providing effective and practical solutions. We present strategies and concerns to city councils, transit authorities, and representatives to keep ease of transport a high priority for a growing population. Make a suggestion on the items below or submit a concern that you want to address!

Rights of way

Commuters and leisure riders alike need clearance and rights of way passages. We advocate for installation of these programs in communities where this option is most needed. What developments in your community are reducing access to your rights of way? How can we advocate for harm reduction and prevention for commuters who rely on these?

Pedestrian safety and resources

Expanding resource availability for pedestrians to link rural and urban areas. Orting's Rails to Trails system was a revolutionary way to connect our neighbors to more greenspace and reach more urban areas heading out of the foothills toward the sound. Going the other way, urban visitors seek respite in the unveiling of greenspace toward the foothills. But how can we make this mode of transportation more fluidly accommodating for regular commutes?

Electric vehicle resources

Relay or uncover resources and incentives for electric vehicle owners. Is your community in need of charging stations? We can help advocate for access and installation together!

Highway 162 Information Session _ June 2025

Our collaboration with the Highway 162 Community Group brought the opportunity to participate in an event at McMillin Grange concerning our county's involvement with future developments in the Orting valley corridor. Extensive plans for the highway were met with both friction and resolve as groups joined to share updates on development and resilience. WSDOT has the reins on most of the highway's projects, but we spoke with others to reduce traffic congestion and explored alternatives with Sound Transit. There is a LONG way to go. But the ball is rolling! Friction invites the opportunity for exploring which paths have least resistance. When we hit walls, we find detours around them. But we cannot do it alone! Join us and give your suggestions to find solutions together!

Orting City Council Meeting _ 4/16/25

Our first public soft launch was an appearance at the Orting City Council, sharing concerns of failed accommodations and implications of unmet goals. To refer to the recorded presentation, you can explore the video archives on the City of Orting's website under "government">>"city council">> "video archives">>"4/16/25" and timestamp at 1:04:25, or click the link. Here, we advocate for expanding Orting's access to Sound Transit to reach broader transit in Sumner, Puyallup and Bonney Lake. The average single-use worker commute out of Orting is 40 minutes and does not account for average distance, which may not even leave the valley at peak congestion. One in five Orting commuters have a commute of 60-90 minutes or more. Orting's steady growth meets an unprecedented projection for the school district's enrollment capacity, which will put more strain on commutes endangering pedestrians and students alike. Meanwhile, Orting is taxed by the Regional Transit Authority at $3 million/year, with no adjustments to growth. Join us in solidarity to curb our misuse of tax allocation and rally for Sound Transit service extensions.
